More Americans have a local craft brewery than ever before.

The Brewer’s Association recently released a study on which geographic areas in the states are leading the curve on craft and which areas should expect to see more breweries develop. The B.A. matched their brewery database (with over 3,100 active breweries) with population data by zip code tabulation area (ZCTA) from the 2010 U.S. Census. From the census, 17.1% of the population lived in a ZCTA with a brewery.

1873 was the high point for American breweries but the population was much less so it’s possible that more Americans now have a local brewery than at any point in history. An interesting fact the B.A. brought up is that the ZCTAs containing microbreweries, regional breweries, and brewpubs look pretty similar.

ZCTA-histogram-2With only 17.1% of the population having a brewery nearby, there’s still plenty of room for the number of breweries to grow.
